The WOOP is a 77 player poker tournament with a $500 buy-in. Less experienced players can also opt to play in the 33 person second chance tournament for a $250 buy-in.
History
Way back in 2007, a royalty buyer out of California decided to start the World Oilman’s Poker Tournament (WOPT) in Las Vegas, NV as the oil & gas industry’s premier networking event. In the first year, most attendees didn’t know the difference between a big blind and a little blind, but since then poker has become very popular in the oil patch and the WOPT has become a sell-out event.
Many years later, this same royalty buyer was living in Houston and would find himself playing in home games with 30–40 oil and gas friends a few times a year.
In 2021, coming out of the pandemic, a group of these friends decided to formalize the poker group and call it the Energy Poker League (EPL) with the goal of playing once per quarter.
The royalty buyer enjoyed these quarterly games around Houston, but often got in trouble for coming home late. He found that some other EPL members were dealing with similar issues. So, in a humanitarian effort to protect the families of all those involved, he decided to create the World Oilman’s Overnight Poker Tournament (WOOP) in Lake Charles, LA.
It’s not as fancy or expensive as going to Las Vegas for two days like its big brother the WOPT. And it’s not quite as easy as Ubering across town to visit its little brother the EPL. But it’s perfectly nestled right in the middle, about six months after the WOPT, just for one night, driving distance from Houston and easy access from anywhere in Texas. And most importantly it ensures that everyone’s family gets a proper night’s sleep.
